PROJECT 52-2-23 Lighting: Silhouettes
Posted By: mithrandir, 12-11-2009, 12:25 AM

For Week 23 we will compose our shots to incorporate silhouettes (any dark shape or figure seen against a light background).

Here are a couple of links to get the creative juices flowing:

Digital Focus: Taking Silhouettes

12 Stunning Silhouette Shots

(Pictures for the week 23 competition are to be taken and posted between 20091213 and 20091220).

NOTE: We have two Seasonal competitions planned for the last two weeks of year two. You may take pictures for these anytime between 20090705 and the posting dates of 20100704 or 20100711. This way you can include your favorite holiday or season whenever it occurs during the year.

Rules:
1. Anyone and everyone who is interested in eligible. The goal continues to be
have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow
Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-2 thread for the week. Explain what
motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly
theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color
saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post
black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
6. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is
active to be eligible for judging.
7. Any picture taken from 20090705 to listed closing date is acceptable for the
two “Seasonal” competitions – Projects 52-2-51 & 52.

I really like your entry jheu02... for some reason tree silhouettes are very attractive to me (my wife was quite annoyed at the inordinate amount of time I spent shooting pictures of dead or leafless trees in Yellowstone during our last trip).

I like that you can see the edge of the forest, just peaking through the fog.

Thanks. Yesterday's fog was really great for this, though some of the trees were far enough away that I couldn't get a real dark contrast. I debated submitting this one vs another which you can actually see the sun starting to come through the fog behind the tree, but this one I thought a little more interesting due to a more-full use of the grey scale.

I did desaurate this for the monochrome, but with how grey it was yesterday, not too much color was actually removed.

Nice shot John! Not very original, but also trees.... A row of pollarded willows at dusk, yesterday.

I didn't think I would succeed to post a picture this week!
But looking at my pictures from yesterday I saw a candidate.
Again trees...not very original...especially after two trees entries...
but I don't think I am able to take another picture before time runs out!

Thanks! I actually tried it with a purple gel on the flash, but the wall behind me in that photo is not white, so the color just didn't look right. I actually like the B+W conversion better though. Has a better mood to it.

Good idea on the card...I might have to try that

Rense, you always seem to capture such great cloud formations. Nice capture...not an easy one it would seem with the birds in flight. Well done.
