P52-2-27 Frame it WINNERS
Posted By: Rense, 01-19-2010, 12:04 PM

I found some time to judge P52-2-7, which had the theme "Frame it". First of all:
I enjoyed all entries, there were some great interpretations of the theme,
and all fitted the theme.

So I will comment on the entries and in the end I will sum up the third to first place.
The order of comments is not totally random, because I want to exclude two entries
from judging. Well, at least they're not eligible for the first place, because they were
made before this challenge was open. To make it easy for myself, I decided to follow the
rules strictly, I hope you don't mind. I think this is one of the nice things of the P52:
you have to shoot your pic in the week the challenge is open. So, here they come:

Ash: I really love your pic. It has nice colours, a clear subject and the stairs are
beautifully framed. It would have been a possible winner....if only you would have
shot it within the time frame of this P52...

Willem: Great shot of this windmill! Nicely framed, great colour too, and
even more so considered the difficult light. The power lines behind the mill are
somewhat distracting though, and the framing of time wasn't that good: I did not
believe they have such nice windmills in Italy, so I checked the original date of
the pic....

In random order:

Tamia: good idea to frame the person in this winter landscape, but it could
have been executed better. Lighting is good, colours are good, but the frame is
cutting through the trees, so not the whole background is or within the frame, or
covered by the frame. This is somewhat distracting to me...

Ken: nice subject, with lots of space and good, pleasing and subtle colours.
I don't like how you framed it though, I feel the frame takes away too much of the
subject. I constantly want to look behind the frame!

Rob: very original interpretation of the theme. Good colours, good sharp, but
I think the framing is not enough: there are too much branches outside the frame...

John: also a good shot, with a good B&W conversion, fitting the main subject
of the picture. It's slightly tilted though, and the vase in the foreground is drawing
my attention away from the grave stone. But all in all: well done!

Frank: good shot! Nice and crisp, with a nice reflection in the foreground.
And the framing is done well. The only distraction is the imperfection of the arch
of the bridge (caused by the way above?).

Nomad: beautiful landscape. I like the colours a lot, but I can't decide what
is the real subject: the trees, or the (rather boring in itself) mountains behind. If
the landscape behind would have been a little sharper, this would have been a
possible winner!

Third place: Iris: very nice shot. The frame is not distracting at all, and I like the way
Tux is looking though the gate. For me it could have been a little sharper only...

Second place: Dave: what a common subject! But the framing is very good,
with the cupboard walls and the OOF cans. Well done!

And the first place: Corey: beautiful shot, there's a lot to see. Although the basket
- the framed subject - is OOF, it is an essential part of the subject, and it
wouldn't have been when you wouldn't have framed it. Good conversion too, and
with a distinct subject in the foreground, this photo has lots of depth. Well done.

Congratulations to the winners, and to you all! Well done, up to P52-2-28: leading lines.
Have fun shooting!!

Aww, drats!
Never knew I could be penalised for being overzealous!
Well, lesson learned.
But congrats to Corey. Great stuff - I admire your unique flair.
Well done also to Dave and Iris.

Congrats to Corey! Took me a minute to notice the 'framing' but I think that's the beauty of it. Great composition too with the basketball.

Congrats also to Dave and Iris!

Nice job judging Rense. Looking forward to seeing the entries for the next theme.

First of all Corey, Dave And Iris congratulations!
My apologies, I didn't read the rules very well and mixed up the dates of this project and the seasonal competions.

Congrats to Dave and Iris and Thanks to Rense for the 1st place nod. There is a little story behind the photo. I took the photo in the parking lot at my job. I happen to be standing next to a co workers car. While in the middle of composing the pic, a lady comes out and says "excuse me, can I help you? What are you doing to my tire??" She thought I was a tow truck worker or something, or a thief trying to steal a Jeep Cherokee tire and wheel! Anyway, I explained myself and let her know I work here and im taking a pic for a contest. After going back and forth for a min, she realizes she knows me, and wishes me luck. The things us photographers go through to get a pic. I think im going to frame a copy of my pic and send it to her..

Corey, great idea. Win the critics over one by one with kind words and actions.
