Weekly Challenge #124 - Melancholy
Posted By: Iris, 01-27-2010, 02:53 PM

Weekly Challenge #124 - Melancholy

The challenge explained:

It's this time of year, when the days are short and the weather is often grey, I always have melancholy feelings. I know I am not the only one; lots of people suffer from a winter depression.
Instead of thinking of spring and summer, I want you to show me pictures that emphasize my melancholy feelings. So this week it’s al about capturing this specific mood!

It can be anything: a person, a landscape, an object, it doesn’t matter as long as it capturing the melancholy feeling! Be creative. Good luck and have fun!!!

A quote from Peter is worth repeating...
Something I feel is important with these challenges. Submit your photos, it's a chance to learn and expand everyone's viewpoint.
You might not think yours is a winner but that's not really the point. We all enjoy seeing a different perspective and learn from each other. Have fun and post your shot!

To emphasize his words:
I bought my camera (it's my first dslr) in December and it was the first time I joined the weekly challenge ..... and somehow I won......so you never know

Challenge Starts:
On your mark, get set, SHOOT!!! (and submit)

Challenge Ends:
Saturday, February 6, 2010 @ 1159PM EST

The fine print....
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread, and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera will do or a Samsung DSLR.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.

Snowy Day, viewed from my living room. It snowed for two days and I'm not a big fan of snow

Considering how my wife gets into a funk during the winter I think I have a plan. Great idea for a subject.

JimH, can you post a bigger picture (900x 900 is nice), this one is really small.
I like to see what's on the picture

I had a few that I could have chosen for this Challenge, Melancholy is a feeling I like to try and capture in my photos.
In the end I've decided to go with this monument from inside the Basilica di Santa Croce, Florence, Italy.

Not sure I can explain why I feel it fits the theme. The lack of sharpness is intentional. The color, texture, and vignetting is post obviously. This is an older shot, from 08.

Another Day At The Office

I feel guilty entering this image, as it won Weekly Challenge #50 - Expressions. But it fits this challenge perfectly and is an image I will never be able to duplicate if I tried. Feel free to consider it as an exhibition piece instead of an entry if you so desire Iris.

There I tried a different method of attaching the image, this worked a little better.

When you open up the image to full size, there are two links at the bottom you can copy. One is a [img] and one is a . Just copy and past the [img] one to your post (do not use the Insert Image button).

<-- Extra spaces added to show the link and prevent it from posting as a picture.

And it will show up like this.

Tim

ETA: you seemed to have figured it out during the 4 minutes it took me to post my reply. Great!

Here's a picture of my girlfriend bundled up under a blanket overlooking a lake on a dreary day. This picture probably is more fitting to me because i remember the events of the day, but hopefully the picture portrays it sufficiently. :-)

This was taken at the Omaha Zoo. The pictures is not the sharpest in the drawer but I like the feeling the partially closed hand evokes.

Lone Chickadee

Taken on a sub-zero (Fahrenheit) morning. He called and no others came. (But then they did after half an hour.)

Wohow, some great shots already, the bar is set high! Knowing Iris, I'm not raising my chances with 1.) a people shot, and 2.) a framed shot, but I felt I had to enter this one. It's my little niece Anne-Mirthe. This shot evokes MELANCHOLY for me in capitals......
