Weekly Challenge #125 - The Element of Time

Weekly Challenge #125 - The Element of Time

The challenge explained:

I've always been interested in the dichotomy between still photography and video. Video seems to have so many more ways to show the passage of time, but the photographer is not without his or her tricks either. But still, one of the hardest things for me, with my camera, is to include the element of time within the frame. All photography stops time for a moment, but there are ways to still capture that element within the frame.

So that's the challenge this week: show a photo that reveals the element of time. It can be as abstract or as non-abstract as you like.

Challenge Starts:
On your mark, get set, SHOOT!!! (and submit)

Challenge Ends:
Saturday, February 19th, 2010 @ 1159PM EST

The fine print....
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread, and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera will do or a Samsung DSLR.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.

Time times three

A very tough subject to understand what you are looking for Keitha.

Three elements of time in this image. 1st the obvious - the clock. 2nd - long time exposure (4 seconds). 3rd - 75th anniversary celebration of Union Terminal in Cincinnati, OH [Now a museum]

I agree it's a tough subject, and God knows I was half asleep when I wrote this this morning, but I wanted to leave it a little open to see how other people interpreted it. And I think you did a magnificent job

I'll give it a shot, Keitha. For me, rivers and the way they shape the landscape embody a sense of time almost like no other natural phenomenon. Here's a March photo of my local river, with successive ice shelves left hanging as water levels dropped over the previous weeks and months, but the river keeps flowing on and on, endlessly. I guess there's an additional element of time, too. I took the photo last year. This March, the river will still be there, the ice shelves will too, but they'll be different than last year, because with each passing minute, rivers change, even minutely.

There are some great interpretations of the theme so far - well done. I debated on a few shots and well decided on this one. Passage of time can be represented in the boy graduation high school certainly a passage of time almost all of us go through , it also shows three generations of 'da boys' a much more literal showing of the ‘elements of time’ and the effect.

You are a cruel woman Keitha...

I have a few ideas (melting clocks...) and may see what I can do with this challenge. Does it have to be a single image or do triptychs and such count?

This is an idea I've stolen from the Dutch PENTAXIAN forum I'm a member of. One of the available methods to record time are long shutter speeds, demonstrated here on my watch. Shot today, and yes, I have to adjust the date.... But thats's not the point of this one ;D.

The more I think about how to do this without a clock or watch, the harder it becomes.

That is a nice image Rense. Great contrast.

Tamia, your's is quite philosophical.... "Panta Rhei" It's what the Greek philosopher Heraclites said: You can't step twice in the same river, because everything flows, everything changes....

Thank you both. The trouble I had was finding an image in my files that could stand on its own without an explanation and I couldn't do it.

Interior from the replica of the Swedish East India Man Götheborg with the navigation instruments from back then. Amongst other things, time-glasses.

I decided to go the direct route with this photo. Big Ben in London. This photo shows the passage of time in a couple of different ways - obviously with a clock, but also with the darkening evening sky. I also like the hint of two faces of time with the double clock faces.

Here's mine. Somewhere in Idaho. My idea for this theme was to depict the passage of time.
