Picture of the Week 103: February 21, 2010 to March 7, 2010
Posted By: Tamia, 02-27-2010, 06:23 PM

Hey all, we're now on the 103rd edition of the POTW!

Photolady, our previous host, passed the baton to me last, and I can say I'm humbled! This is the first time I've hosted POTW, or anything on this great forum.

We've posted a lot of great pictures last week, so let's get psyched to surpass last week's showing. Spring's in the air here in the northern hemisphere, and I know you Pentaxians down in the southern hemisphere are heading toward autumn. Changes of season are always great for photo shoots. So what do you say? Let's share round a few shots of what's happening where we all live.

I extend a particular welcome to everyone who's new to the Pentax forum. You'll find a friendly bunch here, folks who are always willing to extend a hand and offer encouragement. So don't be shy about sending in a few of your pictures. We share a common interest after all.

Feel free to post your photos from this coming week, as well as this last week!

Again same rules and really other than time frames, there are no rules:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.

2) Let's keep it to about 4-6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.

3) Any Pentax camera or Samsug DSLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR

4) Date: Sunday February 21, 2010 to Sunday March 7, 2010. Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.

5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via PM. If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between 12:00EST and 5PM EST on the Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact Peter Zack, Moderator via PM.

Previous hosts: Each one is a hotlink to that POTW thread to look past at the previous 97 weeks. 1 Peter Zack, 2Eaglerapids 3 rmtagg, 4 Peter Zack, 5 daacon, 6 Bramela, 7 mtnbearhug, 8 dantuyhoa, 9 gawan,10 roentarre, 11 daacon, 12 Kris, 13 mtnbearhug, 14 SCGushue, 15 daacon, 16 maxwell1295, 17 dantuyhoa, 18 daacon, 19 maxwell1295 19(2) daacon, 20 Bramela, 21 Syb, 22 maxwell1295, 23 maxwell1295, 24 dantuyhoa, 25 Gawan, 26 Peter Zack, 27 borno, 28 daacon, 29 gawan, 30 Damn Brit, 31 maxwell1295 32 maxwell1295 , 33 dantuyhoa, 34 daacon, 35 Peter Zack, 36 Damn Brit, 37 Borno, 38 Kevint, 39 Peter Zack, 40 Timbo13, 41 daacon, 42 daacon, 43 gawan, 44 dantuyhoa, 45 daacon, 46 Rense, 47 daacon, 48 Rense, 49 borno, 50 Rense, 51 daacon, 52 Peter Zack, 53 Peter Zack, 54 dadipentax, 55 David Whiteley, 56 planedriver, 57 daacon,58 Bramela, 59 daacon, 60 gawan, 61 virgilr, 62 daacon, 63 RickL, 64 Peter Zack, 65 Peter Zack, 66 Causey 67 daacon, 68 Bramela, 69 georgeweb, 70 daacon, 71 seacapt, 72 daacon, 73 AOski, 74 Rense 75 eccs19, 76 daacon, 77 xs400, 78 daacon, 79 Bramela, 80 borno, 81 legacyb4, 82 daacon, 83 gawan, 84 Rense, 85 Peter Zack, 86 davef, 87 davef, 88 xjjohnno 89 Bramela , 90 Peter Zack, 91 daacon, 92 stevebrot ,93 reeftool, 94 jezza323, 95 oldschool, 96 Iris, 97 Rense, 98 planedriver, 99 xs400, 100 Peter Zack, 101 Netuser 102 Photolady, 103 Tamia

Dave, you're killing me - what a wonderful get-away.

Here's some from me. The winter has been pretty blah in the Salt Lake area. Not enough snow for interesting photography and so there's nothing to add contrast to the flat colored trees with the flat colored ground and the flat colored sky.

1. my daughter throwing bread to some ducks:

2. My other daughter with her Girl Scout cookies to deliver. There's about 200 cases.

3. A neighbor's kid playing basketball.

Great shot of the Mallard in flight , Nomad!
I just got a DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED, I didn't get quite that shot. I found a hornet's nest and this young Red Headed Woodpecker. He was way up there and wouldn't give me a clear shot, but I'm in love with the potential already.

That filthy 4 letter word called work has imposed on my pic taking capacity this week so I'll post some more of those old Brit dungers that trundled through the park on the weekend.

Xanthoria

Xanthoria is one of those lichens everybody has seen. It's the yellow lichen on trees and walls and rooftops in places where there is quite a lot of Nitrogen deposition. So you can find it in heavily (over-)manured agricultural landscapes on trees. You can find it on old walls. And on our rooftop where birds s(h)it. Lichens are indicators for healthy air. Yeah, some are, but not this Xanthoria, and that's why I wanted to show you one, on our rooftop.

Rense, your landscapes are striking -- evocative, moody, joyful. And thanks for the mention of Xanthoria. Lichens are fascinating and beautiful. Oh, and the hawk is lovely, too.

Ramseybuckeye, you got great captures of birds. It's not easy to get close to the nuthatches and especially cardinals. Congratulations on seeing and photographing the greater white-fronted goose. Never have seen one here in northern NY. That DA 55-300mm looks like a winner. I'm strongly tempted to get one for bird photography.

More terrific sets of photos, Bumbibop. Poor bikes! I like that house in the "fake-HDR" pic.

Dave, welcome back! And bearing gifts, too! Such colorful, warm, welcoming pictures to make those of us stuck in snow yearn ever more for spring.

Scott, thumbs up to your daughter for selling so many Girl Scout cookies!

Xjjohnno, lovely antique cars, and a snazzy motorcycle, too. Some folks took a lot of time and put in lots of effort to restore those.

Scott thanks for the comments - I hear ya it's killimg me to look back on them and questioning why we left ? (well the answer to that is pretty obviou$$ haha). Nice bball shots reminds me of my daughter when she played. Gym's are tough lighting for sure. Good God man I hope your daughter knows 1000 people for those cookies

Robin - thanks for the comments. Indeed we need spring / summer to come here ! it has been nice but it's the in like a lamb that worries me ....Not sure what you mean by fake HDR but it looks good to me. Love the snow on the roof and the contrast in color. Nice cat as well.

Tom - nicely done looks like you are going to have some fun with that one. That looks like a huge wasp's nest.

John - I agree work is a nast 4 letter word Nice vintage cars there mate.

Rense - thanks for the info ! The hawk is pretty good as well.

Tamia - thanks for the comments and hosting.

Well, bout the "fake HDR" .. some ppl consider making HDR from one single picture mixed up in several exposure from post processing, as fake. And as I didn't have time (the picture was taken from a car while driving by) to shoot several pictures.. it can be considered fake :P

Several more nice pictures from you Dave, great ones!

I'm home sick today, from that thing .. work..
But I couldnt resist taking a small walk anyway so here we go:

Again, Xavi is relaxing:

A pair of reebooks were waiting for the green light.

Worked to get rid of the icicles and snow from the rooftops.

Last and least, a pic of the cameraman.

Have a f/2.8 at 200 mm sure helps - as well as the K20's white balance preview (I just shoot JPEG). The lens performed pretty well. I've read about focus speed issues, but I didn't see a problem.

Most of those are for people who have already ordered, it's just a matter of delivering now.

Thanks - she's not #1 in the state, but she's probably in the top 10.

Another one from me - just a duck.
(K20D w/Tamron SP AF 70-200mm F2.8)

I can't quite tell where the focus is here. This was at ISO 100 and f/2.8 - probably should have diled up the ISO and stopped down a bit.

I still like the brown and tan pattern with the touch of color.

Finally have some snow sticking to the ground today. I'll have to get some photos before it melts.

Thanks, Tamia, I think your inspiring start to this week's thread is bringing the best out of these Pentaxians. Some really nice images here. When I took that goose I had no idea what it was, just that it was odd. A couple of other photographers were out there and more interested in the wigeon (also unusual here), one of them thought it might be a white-fronted, but they really thought it was a domestic cross breed.

Thanks, Daacon, that nest was as big as or bigger than a basketball. Hope you see some green in Alberta soon, our snow has been melting this week in Ohio, nice and slowly! I really like that surf picture with the pier, they are all great - just don't cry looking at them.
