Weekly Challenge # 128 - Sepia or Dual Tone
Posted By: atupdate, 03-17-2010, 10:44 AM

The challenge explained:

It's easy to covert an image to sepia or duotone but the trick is to convert an image that benefits from the conversion. Post your best image and make a convert out of me. A good description of duotone is found in the Luminus Landscape link provided by slinco in a post later in this tread [Duotone].

"A Duotone takes a monochrome grayscale image and allows you to take the tonal range, from lightest tones to darkest, and allocate a different colour to specific part of the tonal range. You can for example make the highlights red and the shadows green (though you're unlikely to want to). What you may want to do though, as in the combination called yellow bl 4 that Adobe provides with Photoshop 6, is to combine black and yellow so that they produce the tonalities seen in my example image below called Point Pelee Fisherman. Other combinations that work well are black and medium-blue, or black and cyan, or black and brown. "

The fact that I couldn't even spell Duotone correctly in the thread title shows how little I use it myself. I do use sepia but not all images fit that style, so I thought I would expand the challenge scope and learn something as I did the judging.

Challenge Starts:
NOW

Challenge Ends:
Wednesday, March 24th, 2010 @ 11:59PM Official Server Time

The fine print....
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread, and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera will do or a Samsung DSLR.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.

It didn't take a lot to envision this as a black and white scene. There was little color anyhow as Spring is just trying to get here, and these buildings haven't seen fresh paint for a long time.

I used levels to give it an overexposed look, changed the midtone a little, and converted to black and white. I tried sepia but this looked better in B&W to me.

I'm a little confused on the duotone also but do play with Sepia from time to time, especially when trying to give that "old time " look to a photo. I think it works best when the subject matter of the shot doesn't look out of place with a sepia tone. Since Collegiate Rowing had it's beginnings on Saratoga Lake in the 1850's, I did a sepia conversion on a modern day Collegiate race on Saratoga Lake.

this one is not for judging,as Tim, I am not using duotone much. the shot was taken with a bridge camera, when my good ol' GX10 was sick.

There was a folklore festival and youth wore old style costumes. Guess some sepia added to the feel, made it look like a really old photo

edit: now after posting it I notice some "new age blunder" : the blinds at the window.. my bad )

I hope I'm sliding in under the wire - I can't tell the server time I love this capture. The Washington State Ferries are definitely an icon around here, as are the Olympic Mountains. This is a shot from the pier in down town Seattle - if it could capture the Seattle essence any more than this, it would only be because someone threw a salmon through the frame

Plenty of time. The server time shown at the bottom of every page shows almost 7 hours left, as of this post.
