Challenge #131- Once in a lifetime
Posted By: JeffJS, 04-25-2010, 03:35 PM

Here we go.. I looked at the list below and every bright idea I had was pretty well covered in a previous challenge or too restricted to certain cameras. So, Let's open this up a little bit and have some fun, shall we??

Let us see your Once in a lifetime lucky snapshot. That is, the shot that you were fortunate to to be in the right place at the right time, with a camera, but could not possibly or easily repeat. It can be any subject matter you wish, Just explain what makes it once in a lifetime for you. Maybe you caught Halley's Comet as it flew past earth in 1984 (film shots do apply as long as with Pentax, I'll trust your word).

Looking forward to seeing your entries

Challenge Starts:
NOW

Challenge Ends:
Sunday, May 2nd @ 11:59PM Official Server Time

The fine print....
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread, and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera will do or a Samsung DSLR.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.

A few years ago, Dec '06, I was standing on the Durangbah Tweed River breakwater taking pictures of the surfers when I saw a pair of dolphins joining the surfers. Watched for a few seconds and tracked a bit in the surf and caught this shot. I think it fits the theme.

*istDL2 with Panagor 100-300 m42 one touch zoom at 300mm and f8 or so - this lens flared a bit but wasn't so bad at this aperture.

Fly By

I was at an open house at Wright Patterson Air Force base in Dayton, OH hoping to get some close ups of the planes as they did thier fly bys. The runway went from west to east and the light was really bad in front of the viewing area. Just as the sun was starting to set, some clouds rolled in and gave me something worthy of shooting. I manged to get two keepers.

My challenge entry.

The other keeper

Interesting challenge, Jeff. I like finding familiar patterns in clouds, snow, water, and ice formations. In other words, I look for faces and objects created by these natural elements. This winter I was shooting icicles overhanging a falls on the river on a frigid morning, and after gingerly rounding a bend on a sloping ice shelf, I happened on this "face" formed by ice. I think of him as Old Man River. I went back two days later to try and get a different angle, but temperatures had gone above freezing and Old Man River had sloughed off into the racing water.

This is my lucky once in a lifetime shot taken several years ago.I was lucky enough to get picture of the week in "Parade" magazine plus $100 to boot.
The moon was out in the afternoon and the sky was busy with planes and contrails and i waited to see if one would fly close to the moon.I have since tried to duplicate this shot but as you see everything has to be perfect with the right timing.--charliezap

OK. I'll play in this one. Not nearly the quality of some of the other shots here, but it's not that often you see a hummingbird pointing the way. I think what actually happened is that the sound of the shutter startled the little guy, and I just happened to capture it just at the right time.

I like all of them and would say that they all qualify. Hoping to see more but as yet, do not have a favorite. It's going to be difficult for me to choose. Keep them coming!

All great captures! I don't really think I have a chance here ^^ but as I strolled trough my photos.. there was only one (or maybe two) that gave me the "once and never again"-feeling.

Maybe it's not a beautiful shot, it's not that lucky "yes I nailed it!"-shot..
..but it's my better half and her first ever tattoo, which came out gorgeous!

(click for full size)

The reason it's "once in a lifetime" is due to being the first ever tattoo she got.. simple as that.

Last year I was out on a photo hike and found this 4 leaf clover...yes it is the real thing and I I found it at I time I really needed some luck and guidance as a lot of changes were going on in my life. Rather than pick it,I left it alone for others to hopefully find. Funny, I would go back and check on it every time I was at the park to make sure it was still there and it was left alone. It made me smile every time I found it. There it stayed, right through the summer, the fall and right up until winter came. Pretty cool thing!

On our last trip to Sweden we went past the biggest soccer tournament in the world Gothia Cup and I got my camera out in case of some action. There are different games going on at the same time so when I heard the crowd shout behind me I had just enough time to turn and take this photo.

Not sure if this fits the theme because it's possible I might go back there again and see something similiar but here goes....

During my visit to Angkor Thom in Cambodia this novice monk was sitting and studying in the window frame of the one of the ruined buildings. He couldn't have been better positioned if it was posed and his robes constrasted nicely with the grey of the building.
