Not really. The spider was pretty close, but I was a metre or two away from the plastic bottle.

I doubt you'd be able to notice much difference... That's less than one f stop of difference. The DOF would only increase by a tiny amount... Try setting your camera to increase by 1/3 f stops, then take pictures starting from wide open, getting steadily smaller. Check out the difference in DOF of the results...
