This picture has been cropped, but I think it demonstrates the combination of thin depth of field with pin sharpness you can get from this lens. Unfortunately I'm not 100% sure what aperture this was, I think it may have been wide open, but certainly not above f2.8.




Taken on film with a Pentax K1000 camera.

Yes, DOF is razor thin on those shots, but you had to be taking photos from really small distance I presume. I just bought DA70 and while a great little lens, I really wish it was f2 instead of f2.4 so it could take similar shots.

I took these while experimenting with the "Brenzier" method. I could never get the pics stichted together correctly, though. So alas the experiment was a failure. But these pics, while mudane, show off the thin DOF.









These were taken with the M 50mm 1.7 wide open. The point of focus is the left side of the cup, though maybe I should have chosen the straw. Then, according the Brenzier method, the focus is not changed in subsequent pics in order to create a seamless stitched end-product. I took about 100 exposures, gradually limiting the number of exposures to attempt to stitch together. My software, PS Elements, wouldn't even stitch 10 together correctly. Might have been user error though.

Not really. The spider was pretty close, but I was a metre or two away from the plastic bottle.

I just bought DA70 and while a great little lens, I really wish it was f2 instead of f2.4 so it could take similar shots.

I doubt you'd be able to notice much difference... That's less than one f stop of difference. The DOF would only increase by a tiny amount... Try setting your camera to increase by 1/3 f stops, then take pictures starting from wide open, getting steadily smaller. Check out the difference in DOF of the results...

Wow. Those are great shots. This is the best I've managed. Pentax M50 1.7 stacked on 56mm worth of extention tubes.

Its not even in the same league as those shots. I figure I would post something everybody else could acheive!

I take it based on the magnification the lens was *not* reversed? Give it a try, the lens performs VERY well reversed on tubes. Mines recently been retired by the El-Nikkor 50mm F/2.8N enlarging lens I got for $20 (Got the M 50mm F/1.7 for $30) but its no slouch as seen here:
