Hello !

I update previous message with exif data.

The night scene has been taken in Dublin on the evening long after sunset. Exif would show: f/2.4, 1/50s, 1250isos, taken with a K5. No tripod. For me that is the whole thing... How this small and cheap lens is perfectly sharp wide open without heavy vigneting... And how it can handle low light situations!

Of course we are in a city with city light on a crounded place... That mean more ambiant light than in many other place but I still think this is relevant.

For a more extreme case:

Inside a pub: still DA35 f/2.4, f/3.5 (for a little more deph of field), 1/50, iso 8000

Using f/2.4 would have allowed something like iso 3200-4000.


I consider that this very small DA35 is a very, very good lens. It does a fantastic job for landscapes, it has wonderfull flare resistance, good colors. It is very light and sharp. It is both good with a tripod for a dedicated photo session, or as a nice addition to your travel kit (like 18-135) just for it ability to gather light.

Hi @Nicolas06, thanks for the descriptions. I am no expert therefore my understanding with aperture was as I open it wide say f2.4 in this case I would have thought there is very shallow depth of field and have never tried to capture a complete scene till now - I was only going for this aperture, given the shallow depth, to take portraits or single objects.
I am just realising that I can also shoot streetscapes and night scenes but this brings up a question, where would your focus point be on your streetscape...!?
Secondly, in the second photograph where the boats are docked with mountains in the background - why did you go for f3.2, normally we would go with f8 or something around a small aperture..?

The focus point on the first on is very likely taken from the central AF sensor already a few meters away. Maybe 10-15 meters away? Dof master (Online Depth of Field Calculator) show us that using f/2.4 and 35mm this should give us between 10 and 25m of deph of field in this case. This is enough for the subject. it would have not worked to focus on a person in first plane (2-3 meters away) and to hope to have the background in focus as the deph of field would have been less than 1 meter.

On the boarts shoot the f/3.2 is purely an error but this wasn't important at all as there was now near first plane.

On the last pub shoot, we can see not everything is in focus but this is good enough for the shoot... Anyway with 8000isos, you are not going to print this one on big size. But the quality is ok to display on the web and keep good memories of that evening !

35mm is too short for portraiture (at least headshoots), 70mm would be better and would help a lot to get this shallow deph of field. Aperture is not the only thing to consider, focal lens also has its influence.

Last week I took photos mostly with my DA15 & FA77... At some moment I used the DA35 through as it was the focal lens I needed. Believe it or not, it look very good and take the comparisons with thoses ltd:

A great walk around lens, small & light. Not very expensive for a new lens, but review say it is as good as the expensive prime lenses in the focal length range.
The 35mm focal length as same field of view as 52.5mm on FF size. For those of us who have years of experience with 35mm film and 50-55mm lenses it is easy to find the right point to take a picture. dean45

Hello ! Sorry for the late response, I was in vacations in India.

Today I use mostly 4 lenses: DA15, DA21, DA35 & FA77. I happen to use sometime the DA50-135.

DA35, FA77 & DA50-135 are all able to get corner to corner razor sharp images while DA15/DA21 get soft corners in some conditions. The good point of the DA35 is that it get everything starting at f/2.4. Contrast, sharpness, color rendering. It is also quite unexpensive. Only drawback would be for me the bokeh higlight in some picture that can show an outlining and of course will not keep circular when stopped down. Overall, this is a stellar offering.

So on my flicker for sure not all picture are taken from DA35 and many sharp one are taken from all mightly FA77 that I used extensively in my previous trip in Bordeaux. I tend to find more use for wide angle (DA15, DA21) or even tele (FA77) so there not so many shoots, but this doesn't mean the lens isn't good.

just a quick question though. u sure youre posting in the right thread? because by looking at your other primes, and seeing that their all ltds, i guessed maybe the DA35mm that you own is the f2.8 ltd version and not the cheaper lens

No this is the cheaper version DA35 f/2.4 plastic wonder. This was my first prime and I only started buy ltd after. I can't really spend the money on an FA31 that is also bigger and cannot really justfiy the DA35 ltd that is "only" f/2.8 and quite expensive while the DA35 plastic wonder is such a nice lens.
