Using the DAL 55-300 version of this lens. Hope that's OK. Optically it's the same as the DA.

This lens is capable of lovely photos, as the shots on this thread prove. The other day I shot some close-ups with the 55-300mm and a Raynox DCR-150, a new addition to my camera bag which works very well with the long lens. Here's one:

rawr, Tamia, Vladimir... fantastic shots!! I wish I could hold mine steady enough to get such sharp shots. Need to break out the tripod more often.

I can't remember the last time I used a tripod with the 55-300. Most of the time it's just a matter of leaning on something stable nearby, or at best using a monopod.

I should be more disciplined about it though, since it does make a visible difference, especially to long shots. But sometimes subjects like birds move around too quickly, so using a tripod becomes an impediment.

Thanks, Kyteflyer. In my case, I had the steadiest base that was possible -- the ground. I was on my belly with my lens resting on my outstretched left fingers, with my hand palm down. I couldn't have gotten any lower to the ground without digging a hole and getting in.
