It is a bit on the slow side at the long end (f5.8), and focusing in low light is hit or miss.

The Tamron or Sigma 70-200/2.8 is a much better choice for low light, but you pay a penalty in size & weight. Not to mention price.

I'm more worried about the weight of 70-200/2.8. Might consider a 200 2.8 prime instead.

Although the DA L version of 55-300mm is very cheap and I think I should get it for daylight wildlife shots..

Was out walking this afternoon hoping for some birds. Too much wind and not enough sunshine! Horrid conditions for photography. Managed a
handheld shot of a cactus bloom. Thought the DA 55-300 did alright - given the conditions and driver!

Personally I really like this lens. It's not my goto by any stretch of the imagination. but fun to use without a doubt. All these were shot with my K-5.

This shot I caught at work. The antelope kept running to the fence and turning around and running back away and then back to the fence again. There was a train going by and I've never seen one do that. They are just normally to timid. When the train passed he finally ducked under the fence and headed off. When I got to the top of the hill, I had my answer to his actions. He had his harem on the other side of the tracks.

Anyway it's cropped quite a bit which explains the loss of detail but I was shocked on just how well he turned out given the magnitude of crop.

Might consider a 200 2.8 prime instead. Although the DA L version of 55-300mm is very cheap and I think I should get it for daylight wildlife shots..
