It really isn't too bad as a wildlife lens, although it is helpful if your wildlife isn't in motion.

Why they chose to WR the Da 50-200 instead of the 55-300 is an enigma to me.

COMPLETELY. UTTERLY. AGREE.

If it had WR, I'd get it instantly as my full walkaround, instead of the 18-135.

Ditto.

Well, it's inexpensive enough that one might decide not to worry much about WR.

I agree, too. But I do have to say that I keep my 55-300mm on the camera most of the time I'm hiking, whatever the weather, and have used it in rain, snow, and mist without any troubles.

I always thought the lens performed better at 300mm than reviewers suggested. Put it on a tripod and it does very well:

I had good luck with mine a 300mm as well Les. The only reason I sold it was I got the DA* 300/4.

My guess is that the issue was mainly that they were afraid that it would steal sales from the DA 60-250 if it were sealed, but the inner barrel does have an awful lot of extension when you are zoomed in and that could make it tougher to seal as well.

I dearly wish this lens was available weather-sealed. Ah well.
