Thank you twilhelm. I drove to Sta Fe over the weekend and had to stop and turn around to take these pics. Good thing my gf is very understanding.

You don't. Buy them both!

Actually the 77 is a very small lens which helped me decide.

Just a recent shot.

A recent shot...

Love this lense the more I use it.

Nice shot! Love street scenes like this.

There's good sharpness on the subject, but one thing I don't like (and certainly not your fault) are the "rings" around the background bokeh oof higlights. I think it has something to do with over-corrected spherical abberation, but don't quote me on that. This effect is found in a lot of lenses, including my Zeiss 35/2 and VL58/1.4 when shot wide open. I recently picked up a Rokinon 85/1.4 however, and while it's not as sharp as the 77 stopped down, from wide open the bokeh highlights seems more uniform. On the 77, does this effect go away after a half-stop or so (2.2-2.5)?

Marvellous compositions and exposures! I am inspired to put my 77 limited to work but with little hope of matching this excellent work! Thank you very much for sharing.

yes, this effect can be helped by stopping the FA77 down. The effect is a result of spherical aberration - the inclusion of an aspherical element would have remedied it somewhat. But that would have caused the price of the FA77 to be as high as the FA31, possibly even higher.

Yes that is purple fringing around the highlights - it is best to stop the lens down to f/4~f/5.6 to reduce its impact.Purple fringing is very common on fast lenses like the FA77 you see it in lenses from Zeiss,Canon, Nikon even Leica lenses - they all do it to some extent.

PF is easy to remove in LR4. The only time it can be an issue with that app is if there are elements of the image that use the colours involved in the fringing. It is possible to 'spot' correct though.
