Ummm, so it turns out otters are REALLY fast and hard to photograph, especially in low light, and you just made it look easy. MY otters were godawful, so I'll have to offer up a still-cute and much slower bobcat instead.

And, well, more horses, because those are what I'm best at.

It only looks easy because I make a point to show the handful of images that worked. I've taken thousands of images of those otters swimming in their tank, of which only a few end up being even half-way decent, and even those have to be extensively post-processed. Light can, of course be a problem, and if the swimming tank is indoors or covered, you won't have enough light. Even if it the exhibit is entirely outdoors and open, there's is barely enough light. Most of my shots tend to be ISO 1600, f3.5, 1/800 sec, which is almost at the very threshold of what I can get away with.

More otters:

@northcoastgreg - Thank you! And ahh, that makes sense - our otter tank's underwater viewing area is indoors. It was really dark in there, kids up against the glass blocking most of the shots etc. I'll have to try again at some point (and possibly find a larger zoo, lol).

Baby pics from this past weekend!

Yes, it was fun. Especially the cannon (they were shooting at the pier I was standing on):

The ships will be in Coos Bay and Newport, Oregon in the month of May.

Shot on the k-3, the AF is surprisingly capable. F2.8 and 1/2500s, and the full size image is in the Flickr page.

I picked up a used copy of this lens as a cheap alternative to buying one of the newer Pentax telephotos (70-200/150-450) to use with my K1 as I really tend not to shoot long all that much although its very handy for some landscape shooting.

Initially I was left a little unimpressed but after some AF tuning the lens really came up well for me and despite its bulk its likely to remain in my bag, especially as I picked it up for around 320 which once the sales end will likely go back up to around 1500!!
