Given good light, I am more than happy with the IQ of my da*300 + 1.7x AF. Happy enough to sell 3 other TCs I had that did not measure up. Given poor light, no so much. Even with the k20d (thus, stuck at iso400 usually), that combo gave me some of my best in-motion wildlife shots.

However I believe its the scarcity of Pentax TCs and incompatible 3rd party TCs that help the lore of the 1.7x AF.

I'm curious about the 1.4x S rear converter that does not have any reviews in the database? Obviously it is old but 1.4X TC's usually have good image quality, it is manual focus but I would like to hear if anybody has one.

I use a 1.4xL almost every day and it has no negative effects on IQ to my untrained eyes. I could not say that about the Tamron 1.4x Pz MC4 it replaced. Too bad it only fits a few lenses. We have a member that uses a 1.4xS frequently and feels it in the same class as the xL. Maybe if you prod "dadipentak" you can get a review out of him. Sorry dadi....

Here is a couple with the teleconverter and the DA*60-250. I brought this combination on our cruise to avoid having the extra weight of the Bigma. It worked nicely.

For those of you who grew up with auto focus, it might take a bit of getting used to. For myself, I fell right back into manual focus and shoot, most of my life with a camera has involved manual focus and shoot, so it was a breeze.

You have to get used to the depth of field. If you use it on a DA* 60-250 like I do, I'm guessing F11 is the new F4. But any time you go to a long focal length you'll notice depth of field issues. SO it's not just this lens. It's just a bit of a surprise when you use your same old lens but it has different characteristics.

On my f:4 lens, the widest setting is f:6.7, so you really need a bit of light.

SO far, since I got this the weather has been either dull, or other lenses have been on the camera.

But I do have a few preliminary shots. I'm hoping I'll get enough light at some point to stop in down a bit, plus have a fast enough shutter speed to eliminate motion blur from my nervous little subjects. But I should post a few pics, just to get things started.

I'd be interested in hearing of others experiences using this adapter, and how they cope with it's characteristics.

These were posted before but since this is a dedicated TC section I submit them again.

All were shot with the K-7D and DA* 60-250 attached to the PENTAX -F 1.7 AF Adapter at full stretch. All hand held and AF but of course no moving targets.

In this light the combo is as good as any lens at 425mm (600mm) I think. (Exif only indicates 550mm though). I find at overcast days as far as focusing is concerned I just switch to MF. I have the KatzEye split screen installed and even at F8 don't have a lot of problem focusing. But now of course with the K-5 the higher ISO capability is making low light shooting a whole lot easier.

I purchased this adapter during one of my many trips to Japan, I think it was 3 years ago, for $250.00 if I remember correctly. Now they want an arm and a leg for it. If you can find one. In January this year I wanted to purchase another one but was told by Yodabashi Tokyo they were unable to locate any and had a backorder for ten of them. High demand and poor supply, no wonder the price has gone through the roof.

Thanks for posting those.

My impression so far would be that any lack of sharpness caused by the TC, (the DA*60-250 is a very sharp lens) can be made up for by applying heavier sharpening in post processing. I'm not sure if that would be true with a softer lens... the TC doesn't work with my SIgma 70-300 I (exposure ins't correctly calculated) and I can't be bothered fiddling around trying to get a proper exposure... I bought it for use on the 60-250.. so I'm not overly concerned that if used on a softer lens it might make the images too soft. It would be interesting to see images from someone using it on a less than a DA* lens though, and to hear what they think of the IQ. If not, at some point I'll figure out the manual setting to get it to work with my Sigma at 300mm.

Hi Normhead

Just like to point out that my above posted images have only undergone a very low level sharpening after converting them to 72 DPI and resize in preparation for posting here. I have learned to do this when posting pics here because the uploader easily buggers up IQ. Also have all in-camera processing turned off.

And you are not wrong me thinks the DA* 60-250 is a sharp little beauty. (Actually not that little)
