Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro samples

Post a review | Specifications | Buy
----------------------------------------------------

Here's to start off the lens sample photo archive for the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro:

Although the lens loses it's f2.8 aperture quite quickly by about the 21mm mark, the 17-70mm focal length range is very versatile as a everyday walkaround lens, and it also has a very very close minimum focusing distance.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread. Do you find the IQ improve on the newer OS HSM version?

It appears that the mods have updated the thread incorrectly. This thread was started for the older Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro, however, the mods must've updated it mistakenly for the newer Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro OS HSM, which was never actually available in any other mount except for Nikon.

Both Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8 - 4.5 (non-HSM and HSM) are now replaced by the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM. Here's a little history of the Sigma 17-70mm lenses:
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro (I started the thread for this lens)
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro OS HSM (available in Nikon mount only)
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM (bold emphasis mine)

So to answer your question raider, I'm sorry, but I don't have any experience with the newer OS HSM version of the Sigma 17-70mm.

EDIT: thread now fixed by the hardworking and thankless mods here at Pentaxforums

Here's a few more samples from the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro:

Hi,

Had these images online, so thought I'd add them to the collection. I took these a few years ago at a miniatures exhibit. All were shot in available light wide open and handheld. The short MFD of this lens really came in handy as I could shoot the exhibits from the edge of the tables right in front of them and the many visitors couldn't get in the way. Just about all lighting was from the ceiling lights in a ballroom with about 25-30' ceilings.

This is a miniature room, about 14-16" long. You can see the reflection of my hand in the mirror (I had to take a quick shot, and didn't notice). There are reflections from the glass in front (and my reflection again), as the exhibitor wouldn't allow me to get the lens right on the glass. . .@ 17mm

Here's a 100% crop from the same image. Pretty impressive for wide open, I'd say. . .

Another miniature room, this one was smaller, with no glass covering it. I also took shots focusing on the study sketch in the foreground and the sculptor in the background, but this one was the best IMO. @ 37mm

This guy was about 8" tall. @ 70mm

This one was about 3" tall, and you can see how shallow the DOF is by looking at the bricks on the bridge. @ 70mm

The 17-70 f2.8-4.5 DC was the perfect lens for this situation, IMO, and if the newer versions are better, they have to be very good indeed!

That's one of the really good things I like about this lens: you can pretty much focus on something that's right on the front element.

Always liked this lens. Another fun item is that close focus works at every focal length, not like a "macro" lens that clicks in at max (or min) FL. Great fun at 17mm and an inch off the front element - like these two shots!

Really a fun all-around instrument.

How happy you guys are with IQ? I'm debating between this and Pentax 16-50.. Extra 20mm reach sounds very enticing...

@J.Pang, so those photos in HwangShan were taken with the newest version of the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 OS HSM version? Very nice shots indeed..

No, please read this thread this thread again carefully, or even just the part you quoted, and all shall be revealed.

It doesn't matter how happy we are. It matters how happy you are :-) I like the extra 20mm which helps make this a casual single-lens option.

have you compared the IQ with other lenses? Sigma 17-50/ Tamron 17-50 or any equivalent Pentax?

I've now got the Sigma 17-50/2.8 and comparatively, I find it sharper than the 17-70/2.8-4.5, however, the extra 20mm range was a little bit more versatile at times. On it's own, the 17-70 is still quite sharp and I think it would be a step up from a kit lens (not that I've ever had any experience with any kit lenses). And as for the DA* 16-50/2.8, I personally wouldn't touch it with a 100ft pole.
