I just bought this in November. I just got my first real opportunity to use it. It is quite suitable for sports shooting. The AF worked well and much better than I expected as ice racing gets a lot of snow blowing around and it gives the AF fits. The lens acquires focus quickly. When the sun went down behind the mountain and the light started fading, the AF started having difficulty. It was also incredibly cold.
400mm, 1/200, f/11, ISO 100
370mm, 1/250, f/11, ISO 200. A panning shot.
Another panning shot. 370mm, 1/80, f/16, ISO 100. The slower shutter speed made the effect better.
Acquired focus in very challenging conditions. 400mm, 1/250, f/11, ISO 100
In all, I'm very happy with my first time out with this lens. I had over 300 keepers at this event. The riders are all happy. As time goes on, I'll be using it for different stuff and in different conditions. I make a habit of stopping down a lot when I do racing shots because it is a fast sport and I need as much DOF as possible. Often, the bike the camera locked focus on has moved out of focus a little but stopping down to f/11 and f/16 keeps most of the pack in acceptable range. I also had difficulty with the cold. My fingers began freezing, even with a hand warmer pack in my gloves and getting a half press to lock focus wasn't always easy. I was outside on the ice with wind gusting up to 30mph for 6 hours with an air temp around 15F. All these were shot from a tripod.
