Sigma 150-500 DG APO HSM

I recently purchased this lens and have found it to produce rather pleasing results. It is of a size than can be handheld (at a pinch) but performs much better on a tripod.

Second shot gives quite a bit of detail, and that bokeh isn't too distracting

I also recently acquired this lens (the OS version) and find that while it is hand-holdable in bright light, anything less than f/8 and 1/250 isn't worth trying even with the OS (or in-body SR). It has excellent contrast and aberration control, pretty good bokeh, and when you put it on a tripod and stop it down (f/8 or f/11) it is definitely "sharp enough."

I'm preparing a comparison between this lens and three others as "various ways to get to 500mm." Rumor says the "Bigma" 50-500 is sharper, but I've never seen solid evidence and don't have one on hand...

I have the OS version too, for a year now. This is my most used lens. I really like the color and bokeh. It is pretty sharp already at wide open, but improves a lot when set at F10.

About the OS function... first sample is taken handheld at 1/80s shutter speed and it came out nicely. I have had very good success rate at as low shutter speed as 1/160s. To me OS seems to be very effective. I rarely use tripod. All photos are taken with k-r.

Will this lens fit the 1.4x-L A and 2x-L A rear converters? is there enough clearance on the rear end to allow for the protruding elements of the pentax premium converters??

No. The mount end of the 150-500 lens has two (integral) black plastic "blocks" cutting across the recess to the elements. Here is a photo where you can see what I mean.

I am torn between what to get. The Bigma or save $500+ and get this lens.
I've tried to read the reviews, but they are too confusing.
I'm glad I'm not buying it within a few weeks or so.

Bought this lens two weeks ago, and am very happy with the results so far..took me weeks to decide between the 50-500 BIGMA and this one.. but finally price made the decision for me.

Anyway here are a few test images with the Pentax K5. I have read so many reviews that the top end 500mm, does not produce as sharp an image as the reviewer would have liked or expected. However, I am more than impressed with the sharpness of this lens

All except the moon shot were hand held, all shots at 500mm

I purchased a new Sigma 150-500 about 6 months ago. Very happy with it. So far all handheld shots...does a great job using this method for me,

Picked up a 150-500 recently. Shot these the first time out with it and my K-5 IIs.
