think you're right that if you're looking for 300 that can deliver high quality IQ with a TC, you'll want a different lens.
I agree, a mirror lens would offer comparable performance - with reduced weight.

Pentax K5IIs - Sigma 100-300mm f/4 APO EX DG

Personally when I use teleconverters I prefer 400mm f/2.8 lenses - with a 2X you get a 800mm f/5.6 and modern 400mm lenses deliver impressive results when used like this. Though Pentax has one lens no other maker can really match: the FA*250-600mm f/5.6 - Which I have been planning on taking with me next time I cover a motocross event.

Hi,I am using lightroom 3 but can't seemed to defringe the CA sadly..any way that i can do to defringe it?

Is the use with the TC usually prone to CA or?
Yes, while the bare lens has very little to none CA, the TC will multiply and/or add (I suspect both) it`s own CA.

A good excuse to kick this tread back alive
Just got back from a trip in South-Africa. After the image above I also took the TC with me on this trip and after a couple of days I gave it a try. Since the TC isn`t recognized by the K5 I figured to turn SR off.
At the end of the day I was amazed by the results, they were much better then I hoped for.

Birds and bees: K5 with 100-300F4 and TC @ 420mm, F5.6, 1/320s, ISO400 handheld.

Okay! I'm interested!

The photos impress me, especially the birds. I also like the titles you gave like my nemesis and silent witness. Creative!

So is this lens pretty costly on average?

Just bought a used 55-300. Probably won't compare huh.

Thanks

55-300 is a truly excellent lens for it's price. Anything better (such as this 100-300/4) will invoke the law of diminishing returns. I had the 55-300 but yearned for that last little bit of sharpness and IQ that I felt was missing. This lens gave me exactly what I was looking for and I can't imagine ever parting with it. Of course, it's only available used now. Usually runs between $900 and $1300, depending on condition and version of the lens, as there are several. A good copy is a bargain in that range, IMO. They do come up occasionally, though, and might be found at KEH.com.

I just googled the law of diminishing returns. What is the single variable increased in your reference to this law?

Thx

Thanks, David

I probably bought one of the last ones new in stock over here (march 2011) and costed 1050, 50 euro`s more than a DA* 300. I`ve seen them go between 600-700 but as this is a highly valued lens prices creeped up.
I`ve had the 55-300 too, like Doglover says, it`s an excellent lens for its price but in terms of IQ the pentax is no match for the sigma, it`s a totally different class. It`s fast (even while it`s only screwdrive, it beats my 150-500 HSM), it`s very sharp and has virtually no abberations. It`s in the same league as the DA*300 IMHO.

And that`s probably what Doglover reffers to, after a certain point every increase in IQ will be harder and will cost exponentially more to achieve.
