FA* 28-70mm f2.8

I rented this lens for a major family event the other week and shot a range of kinds of images with it. Here's the best of the bunch, at least in terms of sharpness. In a shot like this one, this zoom acts like a prime. I've included a 100% crop after the original. Camera was my K-5. I was at 70mm, which some folks say is the weakest part of the range of this lens.

EXIF: ISO 200, 1/125 sec, f8, multi-segment metering, on-board flash with compensation of -0.7, shot in RAW and processed as a JPEG with no adjustments in CS3

Here are some more images shot with the lens. All are SOOC, processed in ACR but no changes to defaults, and then saved as JPEGS. I'll find the time soon to post some more careful lens tests, such as with a wall chart. For now, these should help someone see at least some of the capability of the lens. All but the pill jar are handheld, and even the pill jar shots were with my K-5iis resting on a table but not on a tripod. The pill jar was roughly 1 foot from the end of the lens. Regular shooting approach for all shots, i.e., no mirror up or time delay. All were at ISO 200, AWB, evaluative metering, no filters.

1) Trash container #1: 70mm f2.8, 1/160s (This focal length and aperture is the weakest part of the lens performance.)

2) Trash container #2: 28mm f2.8, 1/160s

3) Gourd bird feeder: 50mm f8, 1/50s

4) Chimney: 31mm f8, 1/100s

5) jasmine: 31mm f4, 1/50s

6) pill jar #1: 50mm f2.8, 1/125s with flash

7) pill jar #1 enlarged center: same as #6

8) pill jar #2: 50mm f4, 1/125s with flash

9) pill jar #2 enlarged center: same as #8

10) pill jar #3: 50mm f5.6, 1/125s with flash

11) pill jar #3 enlarged center: same as #10

12) pill jar #4: 50mm f8, 1/125s with flash

13) pill jar #4 enlarged center: same as #11

Very nice effort -thanks for doing that. Looks like this lens is fairly similar in behaviour to my Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 - which is also less stellar at long end.

Forgot to come back to this thread. Then my lens was broken and off for repair.

Here's a recent shot at 60mm, 1/90, f8, ISO 200, with flash , from a distance of 3-4 feet. First the original shot and then a cropped center. Shot in RAW, processed in ACR only to change a color cast due to mistaken color balance setting from an earlier shoot, image sized and cropped in PS3.

On the K-3. No cropping. Cleaned up a little in Lightroom CC.

On the K-3 at 70mm and MFD, with considerable cropping in LR

Nice shots. The flower, by the way, looks to be spotted jewelweed.

Thank you for the compliment, and the flower ID, and all of your excellent example shots as well. I just got this lens recently and I am exploring its capabilities also.

I love the way in which convert to BW, slightly soft.
