Pentax SMC F70-210 F4-5.6 Samples

Hard to believe no samples from this lens. Quit using mine when I went to constant aperture lenses, my 50-135 replaced it. Took it out yesterday for a new minutes with an M 50 1.7 I was given. If you don't need 2.8, this is a good lens with good IQ.

I replaced a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 with one. A lot less weight to carry around.

I have a Tamron 18-250 and the main problem I dislike about that lens is that the lens extension comes out under its own weight. I've switched to primes for that main reason.

That is called zoom creep and a lot of lenses do it. Some have a lock to avoid it.

I have a whole pile of F70-210 images...

I'd dole them out a couple at a time, but better to just show a few, and give everyone a link to the slide show.

This more than any other lens has taught me that every lens has it's place. At short range the magnification and fast focus on my K-3 makes it the go to lens in good light. As subjects get further away, I'll go to the DA*60-250, but in good light, it's a compact, very easy to hand hold, fast focusing weapon of choice.

Even though I have the Tamron 70-200, I've kept the F 70-210 as a compact alternative, used mostly for landscapes. The Tamron is just too big to drag around for landscape photography, and while sharper, the Tamron can't quite match the rendering, character, and color rendition of the old F series zoom:

Rather surprised we don't see more from this lens. Here's a few more from my collection:

Norm: this lens seems to render dogs' mouths as round and green, almost like a tennis ball.

I am currently trying to decide on one long lens to take to Iceland in May having the choice of a Sigma 70-200 DG EX, a Pentax FA-J 75-300 and my wife's F70-210. As wildlife may only be a part of it for one day and it is mainly a landscape trip and my main camera will be my Hasselblad 500 C/M not my K5IIs I need to decide if reach, speed or compactness are the most important aspect in my decision. I need to do some tests but the F70-210 and F50 1.7 are the only Pentax lenses that survived when we moved to digital as at the time we only had consumer grade zoom lenses and the non APO Sigma 400 5.6.

This is an image of Max Michel, World Speed Shooting champion shot with my trusty 70-210F. It works just fine for outdoor action.
