Carl Zeiss Jena Biotar 58mm f2 (M42)

I did not see this lens here...

mine is a mid-50's model with the preset aperture rings and 10 aperture blades:

you'll note the '1Q' designation, but not the 'T' on the identity ring

coatings are easily overwhelmed by sunlight and an inexperienced loose nut behind the camera

but is she sharp?

thank you

I'm surprised this lens isn't more of a known quantity here, given it's availability, native M42 mount, etc...

That rendering is truly beautiful... and the diaphragm blades are immaculate! Quite amazing for a 1950s lens. Congrats on your acquisition!

You should expect center sharp with corners not so sharp at all apertures. That is the Biotar way.

It looks like you have a good copy. Pity it does not have the "T" coatings, however.

As for being a known quantity...there has been the occasional member shooting with the Biotar 58/2 over the years, but the Helios 44 lenses have stolen most of the attention and have generally been at a lower price point and higher availability.

agreed....

the popularity of the Helios 44 may be a good thing, too....

I have shot this quite a lot, but on on one of its native cameras, a Praktina FX. Is anybody aware of Praktina adapters/adaptability? The camera must be from early 50s, still just labelled 'Germany'.

The Praktina FX is a very cool camera. I saw one in a shop several years ago and almost bought it. Sadly, I don't know about adapters to other mounts.
