There are six versions of the manual focus Vivitar Series 1 (VS1) 70-210 zoom lenses, all of which can be distinguished apart from each other visually (and their manufacturers can be identified by using their serial numbers). Interestingly, Vivitar was never actually a lens manufacturer per se -- Vivitar contracted with various lens makers to produce lenses to its own specifications, which it then marketed under the Vivitar brand (although the contractors would sometimes end up releasing similar lens designs under their own and/or other brands), and this always-a-lens-specifier-and-never-a-lens-maker characteristic is certainly true for all the VS1 70-210 zooms. . . .

Thats the 4th gen cosina version. Tends to be overlooked in favour of the 3rd gen komine (28xxxx serials) version. But probably still a good lens. fyi

I've seen there is 4th and 5th gen, mine is 58mm front lens, how can I know if it is the QDOS or not ?

Description:
The fourth version of the Vivitar Series 1 70-210 MF zoom series was manufactured by Cosina (SN 09nnnnnn), from about 1987 to perhaps 1995. The most obvious difference between this version (as well as the two that followed) to the previous three versions was in the action of the sliding zoom and focus collar -- to zoom closer (toward 210mm) on these Cosina versions, the one-touch zoom ring had to be pushed outward, unlike on the first three versions, where the zoom ring had to be pulled closer to zoom in.

Description:
This is not only the Cosina-made 5th version of the well-respected Series 1 70-210mm zooms, but also is uniquely capable of capturing red/cyan anaglyphs in a single shot.

The lens has 14 elements in 11 groups, does macro to 1:2.5, is lighter than the first 3 versions, and takes a smallish 58mm filter. Macro does not have a separate switch, but is entered via simply focusing past the normal near stop when the lens is set at its maximum focal length.

The Q-DOS anaglyph support consists of a segmented half red, half cyan filter that is internally inserted/removed near the aperture blades by a QDOS/normal switch (right in photo). Q-DOS is only recommended to be used at focal lengths between 135-210mm (marked left in photo), with the lens close to wide open, and the subject fairly close. The captured images need no special processing, but are directly viewable stereo anaglyphs using red/cyan glasses.

Mine is clean optically and mechanically, VMC is written in blue

Shall I run a test on it and keep it ?

its only issue it that front barrel had a shock and I can fix no filter on it, but does it need any ?

The QDOS version has a switch near the aperture ring which moves a magenta filter in one half if the aperture and a blue filter in the other half.

Mine is not a QDOS and BTW I absolutely don't need that, thank you anyway for this info.
