we all know about how Pentax and Tokina collaborated on the DA 35/2.8 Macro Limited - it is a monstrously-good lens... here's the sibling of that partnership:
It's more like, Pentax did the design and allowed Tokina to use it (they were both under the same parent company, Hoya at the time). Pentax also made use of a Tokina design, the DA 12-24mm f4, quite a good lens in its own right.
And also to be fair, Mike Johnston said that back in the 2000s... since then he became very enamored with Fuji lenses, particularly the 35mm f/1.4 (which is odd since he says he doesn't really like the focal length, he wants a35mm-equiv as his main lens). He's also said, I believe, that some Zeiss lenses FF would probably be considered at the very top of optical designs.
His current favorite, at least the one he would do a one year-one camera-one lens with, is (believe it or not, also my "desert island lens") the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Art which he uses in his B&W-converted Sigma camera.
Still, the DA 35 Limited is one of the best and some could still argue the best APS-C lens ever. It's certainly a Goldilocks lens, everything seems just right - not too big, not too slow, not too shabby
All in all a perfect compromise in so many ways, as all good lenses end up being IMHO. And the Tokina 35mm f/1.8 Macro might be the best APS-C lens (if not the best lens) available in F mount...
