Don't know what I did to my setting, but now an hour glass comes up after every shot...and it takes a while before the preview comes up....What did I do?

Likely some kind of effect/filter or even HDR. Check through your menus or hit info button in shooting mode to review what you might have turned on. Sounds like the camera is applying "post processing" of some kind.

My guess too,

For a long time I thought the Distortion Correction option could only be activated with a DA lens mounted (ID chip inside?)

but a recently acquired Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 also allows it ON and like original poster Manuel mentionned,
also takes a while after each pic to record/display images. (not sure if it actually does any corrections?)

When mounted to my K-x/K-r, my other non-Pentax lenses (1xTamron,1xSigma)
don't allow the Distortion Correction option to be activated, only the above mentionned 17-50mm
