aperture midway setting

for a k1000 with m50/2 lens , i have the following doubt.
can we set the aperture stop in between ?
like between 2.8 and 4 or 5.6 and 8?

if we set the stop in between will it damage the mechanism inside the lens?

Don't think it should hurt it.Some lens have half stops indexed.

If there's a click, it's usable

No. The clicks are discreet stops, but you can put the aperture ring anywhere you like. I have a couple of lenses where the "clicker" has been removed to allow for more easy operation.

forgive me here but I am asking the obvious.

to my recollection, every pentas lens ever made always had the following arrangement.

from maximum aperture to the next full stop down, was one cdetent, then there were detents at every half stop from there to one stop above minimum aperture, the last click again was a full stop.

I don't know about your M50/2 but mine has half stop detents from F2.8 to F16.

As others have said, between detents the movement is linear, but just not stable (setting wise) or repeatible.
