Getting higher res pics

I borrowed Pentax K-x to get some shots of my product and bringing them up in Photoshop they are really low res images 800 X 531 res 72. The size and res are way too low to do any kind of editing and they really look terrible.

I used the auto setting and the camera is set with 3 stars and 12 MP. How do I set the camera for bigger pics? Thank you!

Oh and I can open RAW in PS but read here that doesn't really make much diff.

The K-x is capable of 12Mp maximum. Any larger and you'd need to manually enlarge your images using your image resize tool on Photoshop. 12Mp is big enough for most applications, though (something is happening to downsize your native JPEGs down to 800x531).

Like Ash said something is causing the photo to downsize because 12mp will produce a 4288x2848 photo. I have never heard of anything in the camera that will down size a photo so maybe check the Photoshop settings.

Since this seems like a software issue, try downloading any of they many freeware packages that can display/edit images. If the images can be brought up at full resolution with one or more of them, you've got something going on in photoshop that's causing the problem.

Can you provide us a RAW sample? I'm confused by your last statement - was the resolution correct from the RAW?

Sounds like your software may be only working with the thumbnail?

At the very bottom of the Camera Raw window there is a small dialogue that tells what colour space, size (in pixels) and PPI that the import will be.
Click on it and adjust the import size.

I am using CS4 and it's a blue link. It opens a window 'Workflow Options'. Click the 'Size' dropdown and make sure you have the size without a '-' or a '+' at the end.

This might help:
(CS4) Adobe Photoshop CS4 * Specify Camera Raw workflow options
(CS5) Creative Suite 5 * Specify Camera Raw workflow options

Definitely something happening on the computer. If you can't sort it out, try a different programme and if the same thing does NOT happen then you know it's photoshop.

Or rather something about how the settings for his Photoshop (or rather Adobe Camera Raw) have ended up. There are tens or maybe hundreds of thousands of ACR users, only one of them has this problem.

Also, I found that when I changed the Workflow options it remembered them, so having accidentally changed them in the past seems a strong contender to me.
