Old vs new technologies; the Kr is basically the STAR of high-ISO / low-light / fast-action shooting.

... also, the *ist D does not have SR (shake reduction or in-body image stabilization) and the Km, Kx and Kr does, which also helps out in low light situations.

The *ist D was Pentax's first DSLR. In almost all aspects it's very much outdated compared to current models, however one nice thing it has is full support for TTL flash, meaning that you can use manual lenses with the on-board and external flashes without worrying about flash settings. In its time it was a higher-end model, whereas the K-r is an intro-level model with fewer external buttons.

the *istD as mentioned was pentax's first DSLR the main differences are

-the *istD alont with DS, and DS2 supports both P-TTL and TTL, which is useful for old lenses.
- the *istD can use the internal flash for a master in HSS with a second flash mounted remotely. It may be the only pentax that can do this

-*istD is a penta prism, not sure about the K-r but I think it is a penta mirror. Not as good or big.

- *istD is the only pentax DSLR that uses compact flash

- *istD is a 6.1 MP CCD K-r is 12? MP CMOS with much higher high ISO capabilities

Viewing screen
- the *istD has a postage stamped sized viewing screen, K-r is at least 5-6 times the area and better resolution

- when new, the *istD speed did not bother me, it was nice to see an image a few seconds after you took it, but compared to newer cameras the *istD is SLLLOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWW

Shake reduction and HSM support
- the *istD has neither.

Tethered shooting
- the *istD permits it.

- the hand grip on the *istD is quite rounded and not as positive a feel as later cameras. Otherwise controls etc are well placed but like all follow on cameras it is different. Except for the K10/K20, and K7/K5 pairings the top line cameras always changed button locations etc.

In short, unless you use legacy lenses a lot, and flash with legacy lenses there is not much that an *istD can offer. It is an excellent camera but technology has passed ti by over the 8 years since its release.

I still use mine, which is not fitted with a dual diagonal split image focusing screen with manual focus lenses. THe camera itself, if you can be patient enough for not having the image "RIGHT NOW" is still a great little camera.
