dull image

Hi All,
I have a Pentax K100D and when looking through the view finder the view is very dull. I removed the lens and noticed the plastic arm on the vertical rod is all the way up. It moves but does not want to stay down. Is this causing the problem? How do I fix it?

Do you mean the lever that controls the lens aperture?
If it is sticking out, then it may be broken off... all though I'm guessing, since I can't see it and I'm not figuring which "rod" you mean.

Dull comparedto other K100D's, or dull compared to the 35mm film cameras of your youth? The latter is normal.

If you take the lens off there is a silver rod on the left hand side just inside the body of the camera. On this there is a little piece that slides up and down but on my camera it sides but remains in the up position. Dull as in when you look through the viewfinder it is like you are in a darkened room. The shutter is also not openign fully.

that does sounds as the "auto-aperture" lever is dead. Your lens in in "stop-down", meaning the aperture is at rest down to the smallest which might be confirmed when you look through the lens and see the 'iris' thing being a tiny hole. Normally the "auto-aperture" function is to hold wide open the 'iris' to allow for bright viewing prior to the picture... a feature since about 1959.

Actually its closer to 1975, when the K mount was introduced.

Please read this thread (=> link <=), particularly post #6.

The problem of your camera may be the same.
