lens problem

why won't my pentax kx dslr take a photo with a smc da 55-300mm lens attached, everything else works but no picture

Do you have AF switched on, and is the focus locking onto something (continuously lit green hexagon symbol in the viewfinder)?

yes in af mode, can focus on subject by pressing button half way, but it won't press fully and take photo

Try putting it in AF.C and seeing if it'll take pictures then. Notice that in AF.S, the shutter won't fire unless you've locked focus.
