Pentax f 1.7x tc and external flash-no hss?

I recently purchased a used Pentax f 1.7x af teleconverter. Although I've been mostly pleased with the image quality and focusing ability, I haven't been able to get my K7 to play nice with the Metz 50 af-1 in high speed sync mode. I've tried it with different lenses (DA* 300, FA 100 2.8 macro, DA 18-55 wr) with the same result: shutter speed maxes out at 1/180. In addition, wireless flash doesn't appear as an option in the flash menu with the tc mounted.
Are hss and wireless flash just not an option with this tc, or is there a workaround via shorting out the pins? I've noticed a lot of people on the forums are using this tc with the DA* 300 for birding so I'm hoping someone can shed light on this for me.

Thanks.

It might be because the TC transmits aperture info but not lens info, but I'm not 100% sure...

I don't know about the Metz 50AF-1.

Just tested K7 + Pentax 540 + Pentax 1.7X AFA + any of (Pentax DA* 16-50mm, Pentax DA* 50-135mm, Sigma EX Macro 50mm, Pentax F 35-70mm). Wireless and high speed sync works just fine.

thanks

Thanks SOldBear.
Could be the Metz is the weak link then. I'll have to look into that further and possibly consider a selling it for the 540.

You might look for a Metz update for your flash - it might be a problem they corrected.

maybe defective teleconverter?

I had to put this on hold for a while but I recently tested the tc with a Pentax 540 flash unit and got the same results. I also was unable to update the Metz 50 af-1 firmware (couldn't get the updater to run) rendering the Metz not-so "future proof". I'm starting to think either I'm doing something wrong or I got a defective teleconverter.
Perhaps CanadianRockies could be so kind as to run me through the procedure of setting high-speed synch with the 540 and 1.7x tc, just in case of operator error? Much appreciated if possible.
Thanks!
