pentax 50mm 1.7 lens

I'm going to purchase a s/h 50mm 1.7 lens.
To use with my K100d Super, Is It best to bye It
with the ( A ) setting on the lens, or without It.
What is the difference.

I have the smc 50mm 1.7 "M" and I LOVE it. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the only difference between the K, M and the others is that the camera can set the aperture for you while k, and m you have to set it yourself. what does that mean? You can only use Manual and AV mode on the K and M lenses while you can use shutter priority mode and P on the others which is a + (For static shots the M will do awesome but having an A is a like I said is a +).

Im not sure if you can use any modes other than Manual for K and M lenses since there are no communications between the lens and the camera. The LCD screen will display F--for the aperture. You will have to turn the lens aperture ring manually to your desired settings and adjust Shutter speed and or ISO for proper exposure; or you can perform stop-down-metering (Green Button). I have very little knowledge of K100D and Im not sure if it has a green button or how you would do stop-down-metering with that body. You may also have to set your camera to allow aperture ring as "Permitted".

For A lenses you can set the aperture in-camera and essentially use any modes but without auto-focus.

+1 ^^^^^

I shoot with lot's of M, K and M42 lenses and I can tell you an A lens would be far simpler. That being said for the price onf an A you can likely pick up 2-3 m/k/m42 lenses

On the K100D, the AE-L button serves as the "green button" for stop-down metering on M & K lenses.
