Fried istDL sensor?

I was shooting one-handed quickly out of a car window, and I'm pretty sure I accidentally pointed the camera at the sun for one shot. Anything I shoot now shows up solid white.
If I have ruined the image sensor, what are my options? Is repair possible? Should I shop around for a used body? Should I start over with something new? Thanks. I bought the camera new in 2006, and I have been generally pleased with it.

Pointing the camera at the sun won't generally ruin your sensor, especially if you used a very fast shutter speed. What mode are you shooting in? If you set your camera to P mode and see if it can shoot.

If the camera ends up being broken, I would recommend upgrading to a k-r.

Maybe a very stupid/naive question, but: Did you try the "usual emergency procedure"? I.e.: Take out and reinsert the battery and then reset all settings to factory standard?

Another stupid question: Did you drive on a smooth road or, did the camera take some major shakes and bumps while the shutter was activated?

The sun won't usually damage the sensor. I have many photos where the sun is at the edge of the frame.

The risk of sun damage would increase with slower shutter speed and longer lenses. Did you take a long exposure telephoto of the sun?
