Downloading problem

I have a Pentax K-x. Some of my photos download just fine. I can open them in my editor and save to a file on my desktop. Others show up in the editor, but when I sook at them in the desktop folder the icon is a page with a flower on it and the photo can only be opened in Windows Live. What can I do?

What is the file extension of the ones that won't open?
IE: xxxxxx.jpg, or xxxxxx.pef or xxxxxx.dng?
