k-r + Sigma 18-200

Hi, we are not getting many satisfactory photos using this lens in Auto or Scene modes.
Is there any configuration or setup that needed to be done when fitting this lens (as far as I know it just uses the cameras AF & IS).

Alternatively, maybe start using it in Av mode and stopped down?
(MrsIMF has done a two day DSLR course but finds full Manual mode a bit too complex at this stage).

Without knowing what is "unsatisfactory" about them, it's impossible to answer your question.

You should definitely post some sample photos with the EXIF intact! One possibility could be that you're not shooting at fast enough shutter speeds, meaning you'd have to crank up the ISO. But there are dozens of other possible explanations, as Parallax said

I kept my 18-200 Sigma at f/8 and fired away on k-x and k-r; I was very happy with the results, which seldom needed any more than some sharpening.

This one is 63mm f/5.6
