Memory card error notice

Will my Pentax D100 uses PNY pro-elite 16 GB 4hr HD video. 35MB/. The package said it could be used by DSLR. Why do I get memory card error across eye piece? How do I format it?

Your camera may need a firmware update. Check the pentax website in the support section.

maybe the classification for the card is above what your camera can handle

Do you mean K100D? AFAIK, Pentax has never made a camera named the D100.

If you mean the K100D, what firmware revision is your camera running? While turning the camera on, hold the menu button down. The camera will display the firmware level for a few seconds.

If you have a K100D Super, there is no firmware update and it should handle SDHC cards, as is.

I'm quessing that you still have version 1.00. The K100D requires a firmware update to accept SDHC cards (> 4GB, <64GB). Go to Digital Cameras by PENTAX - Waterproof Digital Camera - Digital SLR click on "Support" and follow the directions to download and install the latest firmware update. Unfortunately, you will need a 2GB or smaller card to do this, because your camera will not read a 16GB card until AFTER you have completed the update.

Basically, you download the self-extracting zip file from the Pentax website. You double-click on the program to execute it and extract the .bin file. Copy that .bin file to the root directory of an SD card, using either a card reader attached to your PC or the USB cable for your camera. Put the card in your camera and turn it on. THe camera will see the update file and load it into your camera's onboard memory. DO NOT TURN THE CAMERA OFF UNTIL IF SAYS UPDATE COMPLETE.

Two warnings of common mistakes: first, make sure you have fully charged batteries. If the batteries die during the update, you have a paperweight. Pentax can fix it, but they do not consider it a warranty repair. It is expensive.

Secondly, the .bin file must be put in the root directory of the card, not the DCIM directory. Don't go looking for a directory named ROOT. The root directory simply refers to the highest level directory on the card, that is not a sub-directory.

Good luck.
