Hi - I have an old Pentax MZ10 that needs repairing. My daughter needs it for her college photography course so I recently dusted it down but it is not working properly. When I switch it on, it periodically operates the autofocus ok, but when you press the shutter, it appears to get stuck halfway through the picture taking process. The viewfinder just goes black. It then just makes a high pitched whining sound every time you try pressing the shutter or the select switch. Other than that, it all seems to be intact.

Can anyone help? Is this mirrorlock or something? Can it be fixed cheaply?

As I recall the ZX/MZ 10 has a plastic gear that operates the mirror. They were prone to breakage. Sounds as if that may be your problem. There was a metal gear replacement available at one time I don't know off hand if they are still available or not. A repair shop may still have some. If you are in the U.S. I would contact Eric.

How old is the battery? Some cameras lock the mirror up to indicate the battery needs replaced.
