RX18 shuts off when zoom is used

I bought this camera for by boyfriend last year and it has been working fine, but yesterday it developed a very annoying problem whereby the camera shuts down everytime the zoom is used. Intermittently it will take a picture on the minimum zoom setting but anymore and it switches off. I bought this because of the great zoom facility, so it's doubly annoying. Any ideas what might be causing this/how to fix it?

Sounds like a battery voltage issue. Batteries don't last forever

Thanks fro replies. Having done mroe reasearch on the internet it looks liek this is a common problem with this camera. Will try the battery route but i don't reallt think that's the problem. Battery was fully charged and indicated fully charge. Anyway, it should die that soon - I know they can't last forever, but surely longr than just over a year? Otherwise they should sell camera with more than one battery.
