Pentax ist D dull and distorted color photos

Photos are coming out very dull and intensity graph only shows for the first quarter, the other 3 quarters are flat/zero.
Swapping cards into another camera still shows the problem. No cleaning or reset has improved the problem.

Are you able to post a sample of the problem?

Pentax ist D

I am on vacation at the moment and only have an iPad and no way to download photo from camera.
I could attempt to photo the display with the iPad, but not sure how to attach the photo.

Sounds like exposure is set too low? And/or maybe you are using the wrong color space? Try sRGB, if you are not already. A sample picture would help.

You can attach photos using our attachment system, but you need to have an account. If you don't want to use our fill site, we also support Tapatalk.

Probably not the issue, but try using Daylight or cloudy instead of auto white balance. i think histogram should be like that unless you shoot raw because it does not have 3 separate color channels. I'd reset to factory defaults(dont' own that camera, but should be option in settings)

I'd also try shooting i Raw and see how that comes out- Could be weird setting in the JPEG engine

The histogram is probably about right. If you look at the image most of it is very dark, only the area around the sun will be bright. That is normal.

The weird color, not sure. Have you tried taking pictures of a 'normal' well lit scene instead of sun down? Just as a reference check to see if it is the sunset causing the issue.

Also, if all you are doing is looking at the image on the camera LCD, it might be the LCD that is messed up and nothing wrong with the picture. No way to tell that until you have access to a computer or tablet that accepts your card.

Also, how much experience do you have with this camera? Has it been working well for a while or did you just start using it?

I've had the camera since it first came out quite a few years ago.
Putting the card into another camera ( ixus 960 IS ) doesn't change the image.
Here are 2 photos of a tree.
(A) 1/250 f8.
(B) 1/60 f8.
The second, over exposed photo shows the sky growing red.
I will wait until I get home next week before posting any more, because the iPad can't show the problem properly.

That isn't a color space issue. Might be an extreme white balance problem, like with custom white balance set wrong - try auto. May be an actual problem. Good luck!
