The file size depends on what you're shooting and the image quality you choose (fine, normal, or basic, aka ***, **, or *). 3mb sounds about right for a typical normal-quality image from a point and shoot.
A 16 megapixel file could be as small as a few kilobytes if every pixel is the same color
