Why only 3??

Is it true my favorite manufacturer, Pentax, has dropped the ball? After being shown the 100+ color combos on the upgraded K-50, I picked one and asked to purchase it with just the Pentax 18-135mm, and was told NO.. can't do it. WHAT? I can't choose a body, then choose a lens? Why not?
Seems ALL those colorful bodys will not support their own lens'. Seems that all those cool, color-combo's only work with the 18-55mm, and only the black, white, and red will operate the motor in the other lens's? Why only 3.. WTH??

Someone has given you bad advice. Or you are misunderstanding what they said.

Most likely you can't get the body in the exotic colors and get the 18-135 as part of a deal/package. Nothing should impede you from buying the body and the lens as two separate items.

As for why you can't get the exotic colors and the 18-135 as a deal/package - it's because Pentax sells the package to the stores to hold on hand, and no store is going to buy a bunch of different color packages that will likely sit on the shelf because most people want the major colors (black/white).

So.. yes, the colourful camera will accept all and any lenses that the black camera will accept. They are identical, except that the colour one is.. well, coloured. The problem is "bundles". This is a big thing, to sell things in a package, in a kit. Sometimes it doesn't make any sense and you will get packaged items cheaper than the items individually. And sometimes its impossible to break up a package and get an individual item from it. It is insane, makes no sense, but apparently it makes money.
Basically, the people selling you the cameras are saying that if you want a package, you can only get a black camera body. Probably this is because the person in charge doesn't know very much and just decided "herp lets make a package" but never thought of all the other possibilities. Maybe its a calculation that colour bodies are more attractive and one will pay extra for it outside the package. Maybe they expect colour bundles not to sell as well as black bundles. Either way, that means you can still get the colour body and the lens separately, and they will work together, but they might not be as cheap as the black bundle deal. On the other hand, buying a second hand lens will probably save you some cash, because sometimes people buy the bundle and sell the lens separately.

Regarding motors.. most Pentax lenses do not have a motor - the AF is operated by the motor in the camera. The camera will operate all the lenses identically, regardless of the lens or camera colour. In fact, neither the lens nor the camera knows about its colour or the colour of the other component. I suggest you get the colour body on its own and the lens separately. The 18-135mm is a better lens than the 18-55mm.

tl;dr: Colour camera works exactly the same as black camera. If a lens works on one, it will work on the other. Any "for Pentax" lens will work on it.

There is also the matter of which colored "Kits" your regional Pentax Division or Distributor ordered in bulk from Pentax Japan for stocking and wholesale distribution. Your Profile doesn't say where you are. Possibly your camera seller couldn't "order" a kit package evem in a relatively plain color as a single-order item.

Scroll through these choices of colored kits and bodies. You can experiment with combinations and then order Custom Colors here and from several retailers (Likely at somewhat better prices - maybe 10% less). Custom orders take about a month.

They'll all work with some limits with basically any Pentax lens, and completely with any lens you can buy new.

I guess this means no "Rasta" cameras.
