shutter light

So i just recently bought a pentax MEsuper and the ights in the viewfinder for the shutter were working erlier today, but now the lights aren't coming on. I know that you have to slightly push down the button to get them to show up, but I did that and it just took a blank picture. I am wondering if maybe I just need new batteries and how I can find out if I need new batteries in the future
