Pentax 40-80mm lens "macro mode"

I have just purchased an old manual Pentax 40-80mm F2.8 lens. It has a macro indicator on it, but I can't seem to be able to figure out how to get it to function. The zoom ring spins from 40-80mm, and stops just before the macro indicator. What do I need to do to get the lens in "macro mode"?
Thanks for any help you can give me, Eric.

You may have to turn the focusing ring all the way to minimum focus before the zoom ring will let you proceed to the macro range. Experiment a bit and you should get it.

As Adam pointed out above, the lense may only go into macro mode at 40mm... It is this way on my SMC A 70-210mm... but on the 35-105mm, the macro mode is available throughout the focal range....

On the 40-80 you have to turn the zoom ring past 80. It doesn't matter where the focus ring is. There is some resistance but it should click past 80.

ah - so it is the complete opposite; the macro is at the far end of the range....

Just to make it clear, as I just tried it. Focus at closest point 1.2 meters. Then turn zoomring past 80 mm. It should 'click' and then focus by pushing/pulling focus ring. You can fine focus by turning that ring.
