Pentax Spotmatic II exposure settings

I have a Pentax SP II, the light meter always show overexposure no matter the ASA setting (except as noted below) or the Lens F stop. The closest I can get it to center is with the Lens F stop set to 22, and the shutter speed set to 1/1000 - changed ASA setting to 200 and the meter centered. Has new battery and I changed Lenses three times. Currently have 400 ASA film in camera. Did the battery test - checks good.

Is your battery in upside down? "+" side faces inward towards the top of the camera.

Yeah, that's how I discovered mine was in the wrong way - the meter was asking for 1/1000 and f/16 @ 1600 ASA for the darkest corners of the room!
