Compability of the K-r

Hello citizens of the pentaxforums, I am a beginner in the world of photography, is the Pentax DAL 50-200mm f/4.0-5.6 ED Lens compatible with my Pentax K-r? and if so is the image quality good?

Howdy! Yes, the Pentax DAL 50-200mm f/4.0-5.6 ED lens is compatible with your Pentax K-r. Actually all lenses with Pentax K mount are compatible with your K-r.

Here is a link to the review section of PentaxForums for that particular lens: SMC Pentax-DA L 50-200mm F4-5.6 ED Reviews - DA L Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

Yes. All current Pentax DSLRs (including K-r, K-50, K-3) are fully compatible with all Pentax DA and DFA lenses. And even older K-mount lenses, but there might be limited automation with lenses made before the 90s.

That lens is the most affordable telephoto zoom that Pentax is currently producing, so it is "the worst" - but it is better than many telephoto zooms in the past and some third party telephoto zooms as well. So its better than nothing, it is better than some choices, but it is obviously not as good as a lens that costs twice as much.
If you want something that is a little better, try the 55-300mm zoom. It is not much more expensive, but you get an extra 100mm range and it is just a hair better, optically.

Notice that both of those lens designs were produced in various "styles". The one labelled DA L is the cheapest, while the newer versions that are WR are more expensive. But they have all the same optical construction, so they should have pretty much the same image quality.

You can check the reviews in the lens review section or look at the sample photo gallery

Edit: To be super sure: I have both K-r and DA L 50-200mm, and they work well together. With some practice you can get decent photos

For photojournalism you usually want to be really close to the action and use a wide angle lens (like 35m to 24mm), but it really depends on the event.
I would say that for well-lit events (or if you have your own flash, and know how to use it/bounce, diffuse) or where you cannot get very close to your subjects - yes, its decent. I would recommend you use it around f8-f14 for best image quality and good DoF. With K-r you probably don't want to let ISO go above 1600. Shutter speed should be at least around 1/(focal length*2), because handshake becomes apparent really quickly with telephoto lenses. Learn how to use a good stance, how to press the shutter gently, how to use SR correctly..
But something like DA 60-250mm f4 would be better (silent AF, better low light performance, better image quality)

If you have something like Pentax 18-55mm, you might want to "upgrade" to Tamron 17-50mm f2.8. It is affordable, and has better image quality and low light capabilities, without the steep price tag of the Pentax 16-50mm.

DA* 16-50mm vs. Sigma and Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 Comparison Review - Introduction | PentaxForums.com Reviews

But still, getting a telephoto zoom at some point is a good idea, as it opens up a lot of new options. I used a DA L 50-200mm to cover a dog show some years ago (with my K-r!)

Well thank you for the advice because sometimes I cover the birthdays of my friends and in my country the Pentax DAL 50-200mm f/4.0-5.6 ED is much affordable than the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8.

If you plan on getting the DAL 55-200mm, I would suggest you also purchase a lens hood for it. It will improve our outdoor shots considerably.

Use Ebay and marketplace here, and other online stores. Unless your country is on blacklist, you can get a lot. Only problem might be shipping and import duty costs.
I bought lens hood from China for just a couple euro. Not originals, but good enough.
And a used DA L 18-55mm or DA L 50-200mm should be very affordable, too
