I know in Japan, they are called 'mansions'.
Which in my mind, is a large, elegant limestone house at the end of a tree lined avenue, not a 25m2 concrete box with a washing machine and air-conditioner on the balcony.

I think you'll find this sort of facetious terminology as far back as we have writing...
