F number problem

I have my Pentax K30 set on automatic but annoyingly frequently the F flashes at me and I cannot work out how to stop it.
Help, please?

Could you be using a lens with an aperture ring, not in the 'A' position?

you might want to review pgs 255 - 259 of the owner's manual

here is a link to the owner's manual

http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/support/man-pdf/k-30.pdf

which I found in the " user " review of the camera body:

Pentax K-30 - Pentax K-mount DSLRs - Pentax Camera Reviews and Specifications

and here is a link to the " in depth " review of the K 30:

The "F--" display means that the camera has not been able to detect a lens capable of aperture control by the body. The most common causes are:
  • Vintage lens with no "A" contacts on the mount
  • Aperture ring off the "A" position
  • Grime of some sort on either the lens or body mount contacts. This may be remedied by a gentle rub with a clean microfiber cloth.

It may also be worth noting that the F-value blinks if you have it in a semi-automatic shooting mode (particularly shutter priority and sensitivity priority modes) and it can't reduce (or increase) the aperture value any further.

For instance, if you set your camera up as follows:
  • Shutterspeed priority mode
  • Fast shutterspeed (e.g., 1/4000s)
  • ISO locked at a low value (e.g., ISO100)
  • Low light environment (e.g., indoors)
Then the camera will attempt to lower the F/number (i.e., open the aperture), but can only open it so far (because lenses aren't magic, though a few do come surprisingly close!).

When it's unable to open (or close) the aperture any further, the indicator flashes to indicate that it's reached its limits - depending which auto or semi-auto mode you're using that might be it.

Do be aware though, that in this situation, it will flash an F/number at you, rather than displaying "F--" - which is the result of what @Stevebrot described above!
