Rikenon 35-70mm Macro 1:3.4-4.5

First time trying out this lens. It show F-- in the display and I can't take a picture. I have tried changing the lens from "P" to and f-stop, but no effect. Lens is in beautiful shape so I think it's probably me. Sorry for the dumb questions.

With the lens set to "P", the F-- should go away in the viewfinder. If it doesn't, then there might be something wrong with the lens...but you should still be able to use it after following this procedure:

I don't know this lens, but a
traditional Ricoh lens switch a resistor on a dedicated pin and is not kompatibel with Pentax. In this case it is a full manual lens for the camera and you have to change a switch in the menue to allow the camera to work with this old lens

Rikenon-P is not a Pentax-A equivalent. I learned that after buying several, they only shoot wide open in auto modes. They also have the pin that can get stuck in the AF screw slot. Many have great optics, I miss my P 28/2.8 lens. I still have the XR 70-150mm but XR lenses have no pin as far as i know.

Check those electrical contacts with a dry cotton bud.

As mentioned, Ricoh K mount lenses are not compatible with the KA electronic contacts. Confusion may arise as many independent lenses have contacts for both Ricoh P and KA mounts (usually marked as PK/R or similar). They can still be used as K mount lenses.

Anything with the Ricoh pin may get stuck in the Pentax AF coupler. The best way to remove it is suggested here: theatre of noise: Ricoh Lenses On Pentax Cameras -- The Ricoh Pin Fix
