What camera? What lens? Did you remove the lens cap?

Good answer Nan, perhaps it wasn't plugged in, hard to answer question when posted with such limited information!

I'm sure a haiku could be created from this.

Before there is more information from the OP,
I'll to say, when I pulled my K20D out of the box (It was New- Old Stock two years ago...) my first shots were really dark on complete Auto setting... the first thing I did was adjust the EV to +1 and it got better... but I shouldn't have had to do that...
So, after fiddling around and looking here on the forum, it turns out there could be an issue aperture lock solenoid... (That's not what my problem was though...) I did a firmware update and the issue was resolved...

I think this was a drive-by poster and we won't be seeing any more of him/her.

It appears that way. I can't click on that username on mobile. It's grayed out. I suspect that means something.

Hey, did you introduce a card into the camera? This would be my first advice.

There´s a difference between obtaining a dark image and obtaining the message "no image". If that´s the case you´ll probably have to check if there´s a card into the card slot.
