Have you seen the size of the sensor?

1/2.3"

My little Sony TX-5 has a 1/2.4" sensor, so the Pentax Q sensr is only sightly bigger. The TX-5 is 10.2MP whil the Q is 12.4MP

DSC-TX5 (DSCTX5, DSCTX5S.CEH) : Overview : Cameras & camcorders : Sony

Just to give some perspective on sensor size ...

They destroyed the Pentax Q on this review, mainly because of the price:

Of course, different than the Imaging one, the reviewer didn't actually *handled* it, but they are mainly talking about specs and price.

3 MP - yes. Not bad for 3 MP photos.
But also note in the EXIF: 'PENTAX Q Ver 0.30'. Very pre-production.

I think the Q should be nominated for the Golden WTF!?! Award for 2011! Anyone else agree?

The biggest WTF in this announcement for me is the price tag. I quite liked the camera concept actually, but there's no way anyone will pay more than $ 400 on something with that sensor.

But who knows. Maybe it can sell as novelty alone. They're pushing it as the "world's smallest camera", which is something I couldn't care less, but Japan market is something else...

yeah not sure why they put in some of the high end specs (magnesium body, for example) and then put in that crap sensor for $800. Maybe if this cost like $300 or something.

Agreed. Should have had a 4/3rds sensor at least.

But it's not just the price. The interchangeable lens system is wasted on a camera with that sensor, and that's at any price.

I wonder if Pentax (Hoya?) did any market research for this product with actual photographers.

I mean, they put high-end features like interchangeable lenses, M/Av/Tv modes, magnesium alloy body (!!!)... It's all a wet dream, until you figure out the crap sensor behind all. Then announce at that price.

You can't figure out what market they are after with this, because nothing makes sense. Maybe the market of the smallest camera on the universe. Which is as useful as a reverse gear on a bicycle.

The only thing I can think of is that they are trying to fish japanese hipsters, considering the "toy" lenses and the quick dials for "photo effects". Whatever floats their boat, maybe... Looking forward for their EVIL, which may turn out actually useful.

It's ridiculously to find difference in IQ between camera with 1/2.33" sensor.

But...If you're fan of every breaking wind from Hoya, let's try... Good luck.
is that you, ricehigh?

I'm wondering who they're trying to sell this to also.

Novices? Perhaps, since they may not know any better.

Casual snappers? I don't think so since they would hopefully already know about sensor size and such.

Vanity/Fashion shoppers? Maybe. And, that's a big maybe, because the cam doesn't look that good to me.

I don't see why anyone would buy this over something like the Sony NEX-3 (with 16mm F2.8 Lens: $549.99) which is just about the same size with much better image quality!

I wonder if the pre-orders are sold out in Japan yet? Seriously, people seem almost outraged at this camera. But I bet it will have a decent following in Japan. Heck, I'd buy it if it were $500. But then again I was tempted by the Rilakkuma K-r.
